Spring Clean at The Herriot Centre 19th March 2007 Local people are being invited to take a nostalgic sweep down memory lane next month. For once they have rolled up their sleeves they can get down to a spot of spring cleaning at a special talk at The World of James Herriot. They will get a behind the scenes look at the centre's current exhibition - 'Homepride' - which features a mass of household products. Tins of polish and cleaning substances are displayed alongside packets of groceries in celebration of iconic domestic brands from the 40s to the present day. "The 'spring fever' talk will give visitors a chance to find out what this annual event was like and how it affected the day to day routines," said Audience Development Officer, Irene McNulty. "This was a big part of family life. While many people still have an annual spring clean, the 1940s were much harder rituals. It was before the advent of our modern day household cleaners so many of the substances used were home made potions. "Vinegar and newspaper were used to give the windows a wonderful shine; salt and a soak removed blood and meat stains and of course oxalic acid was great for getting stains out of your straw hat and ink out of linen." The talk takes place on March 22 from 4-6pm. Tickets are ?5 in advance from the centre on 01845 524234. The Homepride exhibition will be open until May 21.
